Population Composition: Sex Ratio and Population Pyramid
Captions available
The idea
Population composition is a snapshot of a population's profile, read through the sex ratio (men per hundred women) and the population pyramid's age-sex distribution.
In practice
A pyramid with a wide base and narrow top depicts a population with many young people and few older ones.
Where people slip
The sex ratio and pyramid describe structure at one moment; neither predicts how it will change.
