Gross domestic product per capita is a nation's total output divided by population, used to compare living standards across countries.
In practice
Dividing the same total output by a larger population yields a lower per-capita figure; the nation's total wealth did not shrink.
Where people slip
A per-capita average can rise while most residents see no gain, if the increase concentrates among a share of the population.
