Symbolic Interactionism and "Doing Gender"
Captions available
The idea
West and Zimmerman's "doing gender" holds that gender is something a person performs moment to moment, not a fixed trait a person has.
In practice
A loan applicant may present numbers to a male officer and intentions to a female one, appealing to the traits each symbol carries.
Where people slip
Performing gender is not a choice made freely from nothing; the available scripts are socially supplied.
