Homophobia and Transphobia, Distinguished

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Homophobia is an aversion to gay or lesbian people; transphobia is an aversion to transgender people — two distinct prejudices, often paired but not identical.

Show

A person can hold one without the other, since the aversions target orientation and identity, which are separate categories.

Watch for

Both terms describe an attitude or its enactment, and per CD-4 neither substitutes for the institutional term heterosexism.
