The idea

A cohort is a group sharing a demographic trait, such as birth period, that researchers track together as it moves through time.

In practice

The Baby Boom cohort, born 1946–1964, is tracked as a single unit across surveys spanning decades.

Where people slip

A cohort keeps the same members over time, unlike an age group, whose membership changes as people age into and out of it.
