The idea
Racism is prejudice and discrimination used to maintain that one racial group is superior, operating both through individuals and through routine institutional procedure.
In practice
A single racist remark is individual racism; a court system that hands down harsher sentences to defendants of color through routine guidelines is systemic racism.
Where people slip
Systemic racism can produce unequal outcomes without any participant intending an unequal result.
