Social Sciences and History / Unit 9   SSH 0825 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Iron Triangles, Issue Networks, Voting Cues

Captions available

The idea

Groups support sympathetic candidates for access; PACs distribute donors' money. Lawmakers take voting cues from groups on unfamiliar issues. An iron triangle joins a congressional committee, an agency and an interest group; an issue network is a looser coalition around one policy.

In practice

Inside lobbying goes to lawmakers; outside, to the public.

Where people slip

The executive and judiciary are targets too.
