The idea
Interest groups may be broad or single-issue; businesses, corporations and governments register to lobby; membership organizations run on dues; associations join firms in an industry. Public interest groups seek goods that accrue to all; private interests lobby for particularized benefits, narrowly distributed and usually accruing to the wealthier.
In practice
A legislative liaison representing a city or university.
