Social Sciences and History / Unit 8   SSH 0714 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Pardons, Executive Orders, Executive Agreements

Captions available

The idea

Presidents pardon federal convicts unchecked. Executive orders carry the force of law without Congress but lack statutes' permanence. An executive agreement with another country needs no Senate consent, easier than a treaty, which requires ratification, but narrower.

In practice

Video 0717 sorts a presidential act.

Where people slip

Presidents are limited in driving opinion, the anchor says.
