Social Sciences and History / Unit 8   SSH 0711 short lesson, about 20 seconds

From King Caucus to Primaries

Captions available

The idea

Within a generation of Washington, parties overtook state legislatures' nominating power. At first leaders controlled selection through conventions and the king caucus. By the early twentieth century primaries and caucuses brought selection to the people; conventions became rubber stamps.

In practice

Unit 09 carries the electoral vote question.

Where people slip

Nomination, not the general election, is this section's subject.
