The idea

Under coverture a married woman's legal identity was erased. The movement born in the eighteen forties among abolitionists won property rights early and the vote with the Nineteenth Amendment in nineteen twenty. The seventies added employment and education protections.

In practice

Title Nine, nineteen seventy-two: no sex discrimination in education.

Where people slip

The ERA was never ratified; the pay gap is the anchor's statement.
