From Plessy to Brown

Captions available

The idea

The Thirteenth Amendment freed all enslaved people; the Fourteenth and Fifteenth granted citizenship, equal protection, and Black men's vote. Reconstruction's end brought Jim Crow. Plessy in eighteen ninety-six allowed separate but equal; Brown in nineteen fifty-four struck it down in education.

In practice

Poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clauses, white primaries.

Where people slip

The greatest gains came after nineteen forty-five: lawsuits, acts, direct action.
