Captions available

The idea

Adena burial mounds rose in the Ohio valley from about a thousand BCE, then Hopewell. The dry Southwest farmed fully only from about two hundred CE; by nine hundred Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde stood. Maize reached the Eastern Woodlands about eight hundred, and Mississippian towns followed.

In practice

Cahokia: Berger says ten to twenty thousand people.

Where people slip

Most Mississippian towns were small chiefdoms.
