The idea
The Emancipation Proclamation of January first, eighteen sixty-three freed few people at once but made ending slavery a Union war aim. Vicksburg gave the Union the Mississippi; Gettysburg ended Lee's invasion.

Where people slip
Neither Britain nor France recognized the Confederacy. Sherman marched to the sea, and Lee surrendered at Appomattox on April ninth, eighteen sixty-five.
