Captions available

The idea

The Congress of Vienna in eighteen fifteen restored monarchs, balanced five powers, and ignored nationality. Liberal revolts followed in Spain in eighteen twenty and Russia. In eighteen forty-eight revolutions across Europe won briefly and were defeated.

In practice

Mazzini's Young Italy; Cavour and Victor Emmanuel uniting Italy.

Where people slip

Britain and Russia were the exceptions: no revolution. The German case is the next video.
