Four Ideologies After Napoleon: Classifying a Claim
The idea
After eighteen fifteen four ideologies competed, and the exam asks which one a statement expresses. Conservatism: tradition, order and the thousand-year hierarchy; against legal equality and suffrage. Liberalism: freedom in all forms, from kings, noble privilege, economic interference and religious intolerance; the word in regular use by eighteen thirty; the middle classes. Nationalism: the state should match a people; the French Revolution as model; Romanticism as its seedbed. Socialism: the word coined in eighteen thirty-four against individualism; a moral order of mutual care before an economic one; Marx naming the bourgeoisie as the agents of change.
In practice
Given "what has kept the peace for a thousand years should not be overturned by abstract rights", conservatism. Given "government should not interfere with trade, speech or worship", liberalism. Given "a people sharing language and history deserves its own state", nationalism. Given "the pursuit of individual wealth corrodes the community", socialism. Ask what the statement wants protected: order, freedom, a people, or the community.
Where people slip
The trap is treating liberalism and nationalism as opposites; the anchor says the same middle-class people often held both. A second trap is reading early socialism as economics; the anchor calls its first decades ethical.
