The idea
Nobles monopolized power, land, officer posts and their own courts. Peasants in the west paid dues; serfs in the east were sold with estates by the soul. Five great powers emerged, France first.
In practice
Enclosure in Britain pressing peasants off common land.
Where people slip
Russia joined late: the Rus, the Mongol yoke, the Ivans, Peter. The century's wars were commercial and colonial.
