The idea
Nixon won in nineteen sixty-eight on law and order, opened China and pursued détente. He escalated Vietnam to end it: Cambodia, Kent State, the Pentagon Papers, withdrawal in nineteen seventy-three, Saigon's fall two years later.
In practice
Watergate: twenty-five aides indicted, the first presidential resignation.
Where people slip
Stagflation defeated Nixon, Ford and Carter alike. Carter brokered Egypt–Israel peace and could not free the Tehran hostages.
