Social Sciences and History / Unit 14   SSH 1317 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Employed, Unemployed, Out of the Labor Force

Captions available

The idea

The adult population divides into the labor force and those out of it; the labor force divides into employed and unemployed. To count as unemployed a person without a job must be willing, able, and actively looking; otherwise they are out of the labor force.

In practice

Discouraged workers, who stopped looking, are out.

Where people slip

The underemployed count as employed.
