Monopolistic Competition: Differentiation and Zero Profit

Captions available

The idea

Monopolistic competition is many firms selling differentiated products, distinct by features, location, intangibles or perception. Each faces a downward-sloping demand, more elastic than a monopolist's; it produces where MR equals MC at its demand curve's price. Entry and exit drive profit to zero.

In practice

Price above marginal cost: inefficient.

Where people slip

Variety is the benefit; too much is the anchor's open question.
