Social Sciences and History / Unit 12   SSH 1125 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Air, Land, Water Pollution; Eutrophication

Captions available

The idea

Eutrophication: nutrient-rich water promotes algae, and the dead blooms' decomposition consumes oxygen. A landfill buries solid waste against odor, vermin and unsightliness. The greenhouse effect traps longwave radiation in the lower atmosphere; the anchor puts its warming at thirty-five degrees Celsius.

In practice

Fertilizer runoff feeding a dead zone.

Where people slip

Thirty-five is the anchor's figure; the common statement is about thirty-three.
