The Five Urban Hearths
Captions available
The idea
The earliest towns and cities developed independently in hearth areas after their first agricultural revolution. Five regions show the earliest urbanization: Mesopotamia and Egypt, both in the Fertile Crescent, the Indus Valley, northern China, and Mesoamerica. Mesopotamia and Egypt came first, from around thirty-five hundred BCE.
In practice
Then world-empires, then diffusion everywhere.
Where people slip
Unit 05 teaches the same hearths as history.
