Clustered, Dispersed, Linear, Circular Villages

Captions available

The idea

Early villages needed water, defensibility, and land to cultivate. A clustered rural settlement has families living close together with fields around; a dispersed one has farmers on isolated individual farms. Dutch villages are linear along dikes; some African villages are circular, penning livestock at night.

In practice

The iraal: an enclosed village of huts.
