Social Sciences and History / Unit 11   SSH 1031 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Enclave Against Ghetto; Segregation

Captions available

The idea

An enclave is self-enforced separation for a racial or ethnic group; a ghetto is an area of externally forced, legally defined separation. Segregation is spatial or social separation by race or ethnicity. Jim Crow laws enforced segregation and disenfranchisement in the South.

In practice

First effective settlement sets the template.

Where people slip

Acculturation reconciles culture groups; xenophobia fears the different.
