Social Sciences and History / Unit 11   SSH 1035 short lesson, about 20 seconds

State Shapes; Centripetal and Centrifugal Forces

Captions available

The idea

A compact state's distance from center to any border varies little, roughly circular. A fragmented state's territory is not contiguous, islands for instance. Centripetal forces bind a state together; centrifugal forces break it apart. The anchor names only these two shapes.

In practice

A national language binding; a secessionist region pulling.

Where people slip

Terrorism, the key term: intimidation by violence for political aims.
