Independent and Dependent Variables
Captions available
The idea
The independent variable is the one the experimenter manipulates; the dependent variable is the one measured for change.
In practice
Hours of sleep assigned is the independent variable; number of words recalled is the dependent variable.
Where people slip
The names are not interchangeable descriptions. The dependent variable is the one that depends.
