What a Confound Costs

The idea
A confound does not make a result false; it makes the result unreadable, because two explanations fit the same data equally well.
In practice
The recall difference is real and could be produced by sleep, by time of day, or by both.
Where people slip
Unreadable is worse than wrong. A wrong result can be corrected; an unreadable one has to be run again.
