The idea
Mental age is the age level of performance a person achieves; the intelligence quotient originally expressed that as a ratio to chronological age.
In practice
A ten-year-old performing at a twelve-year-old level had a mental age of twelve under Binet's approach.
Where people slip
Modern scores are not ratios. They are positions on a distribution for the test-taker's own age group.
