A token economy is a system in which secondary reinforcers are earned for target behaviors and later exchanged for primary ones.
In practice
A classroom awards points for completed work that are exchanged weekly for chosen privileges.
Where people slip
Token economies work while the exchange holds. Behavior often reverts when the tokens stop meaning anything.
