The Danger in an Extinction Burst
Captions available
The idea
The extinction burst is the moment at which reinforcement is most often resumed by accident, which teaches the intensified version of the behavior.
In practice
A parent ignoring a demand gives in when it escalates, and the escalation is what gets reinforced.
Where people slip
Extinction fails most often at this point. Knowing the burst is coming is what makes holding the line possible.
