The cerebral cortex is the folded outer layer of the forebrain where perception, language, and reasoning are carried out.

The folds pack a surface area far larger than the skull would otherwise permit into the available volume.

Cortical thickness is a few millimeters. Nearly all of what is called thinking happens in that shell.
