Psychology / Unit 11 Psych 1194 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Roles Act Faster Than Personality
Captions available
The idea
An assigned social role can change a person's behavior within hours, faster than any change in their personality could account for.
In practice
A new supervisor's manner shifts on the first day of the promotion.
Where people slip
This speed is why role assignment is studied as a situational variable rather than as a expression of character.
