The idea
Informed consent is a participant's agreement to take part after being told the study's risks, procedures, and their right to withdraw.
In practice
Before a stress study begins, volunteers read what will be asked of them and sign that they may stop at any point.
Where people slip
Consent is not a signature. It is comprehension, which is why consent forms are tested for readability.
