The idea
Replication is repeating a study's procedure to see whether the original result appears again.
In practice
A widely cited priming finding is run again at three laboratories with larger samples, and the effect does not reappear.
Where people slip
A failed replication does not erase the original. It moves the claim back into the open, where it belongs.
