Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 21 MAS 508 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Avoiding Nerve Injury
Captions available
The idea
Nerves run near some venipuncture sites, and a misplaced needle can injure one.
In practice
The basilic vein lies near an artery and a nerve, which is why the median cubital vein is preferred; never probe blindly for a vein.
Where people slip
If the patient reports sharp, shooting pain or tingling during a draw, stop, remove the needle, and tell the provider.
