Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 21 MAS 502 short lesson, about 20 seconds
A Collapsing Vein
Captions available
The idea
A vein can collapse when too much suction is applied to it.
In practice
Pulling a syringe plunger too quickly or forcefully can collapse the vein and damage the sample; a smaller tube or gentler pull may help.
Where people slip
If the vein collapses, release the tourniquet, withdraw, and choose another site rather than forcing the draw.
