The idea
Medical records use many abbreviations, which save time when everyone reads them the same way.
In practice
GI stands for gastrointestinal, the digestive system; IM stands for intramuscular, a type of injection; CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Where people slip
An abbreviation that two readers interpret differently is dangerous. Use only those your practice approves, and spell out anything in doubt.
