The idea
An incentive spirometer is a different device: a breathing exerciser, not a test.
In practice
It is often prescribed after surgery to help expand the lungs, reduce fluid buildup in them and help prevent pneumonia.
Where people slip
Reinforce the use the provider has taught; do not confuse it with a diagnostic spirometry test.
