Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 14 MAS 332 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Tripod Position
Captions available
The idea
Patients who are short of breath often lean forward on their own, with elbows on their knees or on a table; this is the tripod position.
In practice
The position helps the lungs expand, so a patient with breathing difficulty can be helped into it.
Where people slip
A patient who takes this position without being asked is telling you they are struggling to breathe; report it.
