Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 10 MAS 234 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
After an Exposure Incident
The idea
An exposure incident sets off a series of steps meant to protect the worker's health.
In practice
Step one: wash the area at once, flooding the eyes, nose or mouth with water, and cleaning any wound with soap and water. Step two: report the incident immediately, following the exposure control plan. Step three: the employer offers a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up at no cost to the worker. Step four: the route and circumstances of the exposure are documented. Step five: the source person's blood is tested as soon as possible, once consent is obtained, for hepatitis B and HIV. Step six: the worker receives the follow-up care the evaluating provider recommends.
Where people slip
Report it now, not at the end of the shift. The evaluation, the source testing and any follow-up care can only begin once someone knows the exposure happened.
