The idea
Cleaning, disinfection and sterilization are three different levels of removing germs.
In practice
Cleaning removes soil and organic matter; disinfection kills most microorganisms but not all spores; sterilization destroys all microbial life, spores included.
Where people slip
Use the level each item needs. A disinfected instrument is not a sterile one.
