The idea
Antivirals treat specific viral infections, much as antibiotics treat bacterial ones.
In practice
Oseltamivir, sold as Tamiflu, is commonly prescribed for influenza; other antivirals target herpes viruses or the virus that causes HIV.
Where people slip
Each antiviral targets particular viruses, so no single drug treats every viral illness, and none of them is a substitute for the provider's diagnosis.
