The idea
Beta blockers such as metoprolol block the sympathetic signal that speeds the heart.
In practice
Metoprolol is used for high blood pressure, chest pain from poor blood flow to the heart, and heart rhythms that run too fast.
Where people slip
Stopping a beta blocker suddenly can cause chest pain or a heart attack, so patients must never stop on their own.
