The idea
A premise is a statement offered as evidence or a reason for the conclusion.
In practice
In "All fish have gills; trout are fish; so trout have gills," the first two statements are premises.
Where people slip
Premises don't have to be true to be premises. Bad evidence is still offered evidence.
