Introducing a Feature: Purpose and Things

The idea

The book's checklist for introducing an AI feature begins with its purpose and the things it touches.

In practice

Step one: state what the feature is for, such as speed, consistency or insight, in one sentence. Step two: state what it is not for, such as final legal decisions or overriding policy, in one sentence. Step three: name the things the feature reads, such as the notes and fields it draws on. Step four: name the things it writes or influences, including fields it only pre-fills or suggests. Step five: mark which of those things are Gold, because every later step weighs more for them.

Where people slip

The second sentence, what the feature is not for, is the one teams leave out. Writing it down early gives everyone a line to point to when the feature's scope starts to grow.
