Human Growth and Development / Unit 7 HGD 0922 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Memory Strategies
The idea
Three encoding strategies grow in middle childhood. Rehearsal is repeating information to keep it in mind. Elaboration is linking new information to what one already knows. Organization is grouping and ordering information, such as sorting a list into categories or building a mnemonic. Children begin using strategies around five or six, use them efficiently around seven, and keep improving to about ten, according to Schneider and colleagues.
In practice
One student repeating capital cities aloud, another linking each to a family trip, a third grouping them by continent.
Where people slip
Exam items describe a strategy and ask for its name: repetition is rehearsal, connection to prior knowledge is elaboration, and grouping is organization. Strategy use grows alongside metamemory, understanding how memory works, the subject of the next entry.
