Captions available
The idea
Working memory combines attentional control with short-term storage and active manipulation; encoding moves information into long-term memory. Both improve markedly in middle childhood.
In practice
A child recalling a ten-item shopping list by grouping it into fruit, dairy and bread.
Where people slip
Encoding strategies begin around five or six, become efficient around seven, and keep improving to about ten.
