Human Growth and Development / Unit 6 HGD 0776 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Four Parenting Styles
The idea
Baumrind's model, completed by Maccoby and Martin, crosses warmth with control. Authoritative parenting is high in both: firm structure, explained and delivered with affection. Authoritarian parenting is high in control and low in warmth: rules and obedience without discussion. Permissive parenting is high in warmth and low in control: the child's wishes lead. Uninvolved, or neglectful, parenting is low in both: little attention, discipline or support.
In practice
An eight-year-old who fights at school, struggles academically, breaks rules and is self-centred: the pattern most linked to permissive parents.
Where people slip
Exam questions describe a child and ask for the likely style. Rule-breaking and self-centredness point to permissive parenting; wariness of authority points to authoritarian; good coping and compromise point to authoritative. Styles are also bidirectional: a boundary-pushing child draws more control, and an anxious one more warmth, so a style is partly a response to the child.
