Consequences That Work

Captions available

The idea

Consequences come in three kinds. Natural consequences let an outcome teach on its own, which is not always safe or ethical. Logical consequences follow directly from the behaviour, such as cleaning up spilled juice or apologising after a push. Illogical punishment has no link to the act, such as spanking for drawing on a wall. Logical consequences work faster; illogical punishment may teach only not to get caught and can damage trust.

In practice

The same crayon on the wall met with a cloth and a bucket, or with a smack: one teaches cleaning up, the other hiding.

Where people slip

Punishment works best when immediate, calm and firm, from a caregiver with a positive relationship. Time-outs work when they calm a conflict, followed by a talk, and backfire when they let a child escape a task. Giving in to a tantrum reinforces it, and giving in after a long tantrum teaches longer ones. The course describes these findings; it does not advise families.
