Smiles and Imitation

Captions available

The idea

The social smile, smiling at a smiling face, appears around two months; deliberate imitation of others' actions develops at eight to twelve months.

In practice

A ten-month-old copying a parent's wave, and later waving at a stranger unprompted.

Where people slip

Infants can also imitate actions seen days earlier, deferred imitation, an ability unit three placed in the sensorimotor stage.
